Xela, Guatemala: Wednesday, Semana Santa 2010

My week of laying low in Xela has paid off as I am in the middle of the Semana Sanata celebrations. Not exactly my thing, but having no ability to move on, choosing Xela as a good mix of festivities without the onslaught of tourists was a good pick. There are enough activities to keep you busy, but not so overdone that it is a hassle to participate. I was actually surprised at how low key everything has been. Personally, not having very much commercial faith, I am taking a more bystander view towards all the celebratorial activites. Even in laymans eyes just seeing the colors, the clothing, and the processions you can understand the basis of the story from thursday to saturday (JesusĀ“annointment, his suffering, death, resurrection). Fortunately the town had lined the processional streets with flyers showing the days and route that they followed. My hotel was close to the main route so it was fairly easy to catch a glimpse of the different processions throughout the day. Even if an area was clogged with people, all you had to do was walk around the path and you could grab a front row spot. Pretty much all of them were centered around the central park area with the nightly events bringing the most festivites and food.

I ended up taking a lot of pictures as the colors, smells, and activities deemed it a photographers dream. I am posting by day so you can get a jist of how it went. There are a lot of photos, but as you get .10 heaven points for every 15 religious pictures uploaded, it kind of had to be done.
