The good stuff, Etosha National Park

Etosha (26).JPG

Now, even though I knew that the Game parks were going to be very touristy, they were still awe inspiring. You are basically in a huge cage that is hundreds of square miles big. At the perimeter it is fenced, but it takes a lot of driving to get to the ends. Withing the park are three camps that are the only places in which to stay. Since there is no driving at night for your and animals protection, you had to be in the encampments before sun down. To keep the tourists occupied, each of the three camps had a waterhole attached that was just outside the camps fences. They set up a lighting system and viewing platform so you could go there at night and view all the nocturnal activities. Pretty interesting. I did laugh when you think about how we are kept inside the smallest cage and the animals walk around on the outside free to come and go all the while looking at the tourists in the cage.

This was the view about five minutes after we entered the park. There was a water hole and there were zebra’s, antelope, springbok, wildebeast, etc. all over the place. It was kind of shocking at first.

After the waterhole, we made a right turn and ran right into a lion and its family just walking down the road. Unfortunately, there were three other cars right behind the lion, so didn’t get any great shots. Still, another shocker.

Some tourist rolled this van. It was new too. A big fat bummer for someone. Dumb asses.

Night time water hole at the camp site. We saw rhino’s, tons of elephants, hyenas, etc. Photos don’t come out so well, so you will have to take my word for it or visit them yourself.

Lion shots. Pretty cool huh.

Doink.

A funny story about this one. I have this on video as well (hey it’s nature.) Anyway’s, we were doing a boat tour and I was talking to this woman who was in her mid twenties. It was her birthday and she was on a trip with her husband and their parents. Anyway’s, the husband was scanning the shores for a lion. I had the shots and video on my camera so I gave it to the lady and told her to hit the button which started the video. She started watching it and said, “oh my, what luck seeing a lion with a kill.” I told her, “nope-look again.” She kept looking and then “Oooh MYYYYY!!!!” and with a blush gave it back. Her husband and rest of the family had a kick about it.

You can see the video at www.steve’slionporn.com just send $20US in a plain white envelope to Africa.

Not as exciting as Lion sex, but a termite hill can be sort of exciting.

    Monique,

    Heather and Clive,

Good to hear from you. I miss South America. Africa is definitely different, but I like the culture of South America. I just left my two traveling partners Argentinan and Brasilian. Five weeks of speaking spanish- in Africa. Fun though. You still have a couple of weeks. Don’t worry about the end yet. That you do when you take those first steps off the plane and into the chilly air.

Good travels, I just might drop in on you guys.

Still more to come. I just found a internet cafe that has a special for $5Rand a hour after 8pm. Score, as the average price is around $25R per hour. Got a lot of stuff to upload.

Travis has sent my stuff off (Thanks) so I should be seeing my credit card in three to five days. Then I can move on. It’s freaking freezing here. I sleep with sweatpants tucked into my heavy duty treking socks, another pair of sweats over that, a t-shirt, a long sleeve shirt, my fleece jacket zipped up, a sleep sheet, my zero degree sleeping bag, mittens, hat, and my down jacket covering whichever area gets cold. This sucks.
