Fishing report: Si Racha.
Si Racha is a small transit port on the south east coast of Thailand. It is not often visited but I like it. A somewhat modern/old style thai town built on the coastline. The town is a little more upscale than most as it has a lot of Japanese and foreign businesses running through it. On the note of fishing, there are a few decent options. One is the actual fishing port which has a fairly large drive up jetty with a large amount of fishing boats. There is also a major shipping port but I am not sure if it is open to the public. I didn’t fish this spot but usually where the boats are docked, there are some good areas to try.
The second area is on the small island of Ko Loi. There is a long driveable jetty that links the tiny island which houses some temples and is the docking point for some local ferries. At the docking point is the ferry building which is an open walled complex that hangs out over the water. There are usually people fishing along there using the covered building as shelter. A few guys were using live shrimp while others just had lines out. At night time some heavier duty guys are out but fishing opposite the building into more open water.
The third area is the pier hotel areas. I stayed at the Samchai hotel which is an old teak sprawling hotel that is built on its own pier. There are a couple of similar hotels next to the Samchai. The area goes fairly far out on the water, but the tides create a lowtide that makes the area a mud pit. There are some more expensive rooms at the far end of the pier as well as a large sitting area that looks out on the bay a nice place to eat and chill out even if you are not fishing. The area was swarming with mullets, thousands of them. I guess with all the trash and runoff running from the town there is plenty of food for them. Like usual, where there are mullet there are predators. Here, there are a few small barracudas doing some acrobatic attacks. I was going to use my patented pieces of bread to catch some mullet and then live bait them to catch the barracudas, but with the place swarming with other mullet I decided to switch tactics. I had a mullet looking rubber lure that I had been carrying so I used that instead. In the end I got nothing, but with so much bait around to be had I wasn’t expecting much. I am not sure if the mullet are there year round or are migrating through, but I expect that the area could produce some sizeable fish if some time is put in especially at night.
